Ag Day & Gala
Ag Day is one of the most treasured traditions at Wainui School - a highlight of Term 4 and a true celebration of our rural roots and strong community spirit.
Every year, our students get the chance to showcase their creativity, care, and connection to the land through animal rearing, craft projects, and homegrown displays. It’s a day where the whole school comes alive - with teachers, whānau, and the PTA all pitching in to create an unforgettable experience. The Country Fair adds to the excitement, bringing together food, fun, and festivity for a day our tamariki (and the wider community) look forward to all year.
Ag Day Animal Guide:
Everything You Need to Know
Ag Day is a special Wainui tradition where tamariki get hands-on experience caring for a calf, lamb, or kid goat - and it's always a highlight of the school year! Whether it’s your first time or you’re back for another round, here are some helpful tips to get you started and ready for the big day.
Choosing Your Animal

Picking your Ag Day pet is one of the most exciting parts! Before you select your animal, take a moment to check:
-
Do you have enough space for grazing?
-
Do you have time each day (at least 30 mins morning and evening)?
-
Are you ready for the responsibility of daily feeding, training, and care?
Feeding & Grazing
Your calf, lamb or kid goat will need:
-
A well-fenced area with long, fresh grass
-
Constant access to clean water
-
A safe area free from poisonous plants (keep them out of the garden!)
Daily Care & Training
Caring for your animal is a daily commitment and a great learning experience. Regular training helps build confidence for both you and your pet. Stick with it - it makes a big difference come Ag Day!
Getting Ready for the Big Day
A few days before Ag Day, start preparing:
-
Keep training right up to the event
-
Groom your animal to look clean and tidy - you can use a cover to help keep them clean
-
Make sure your halter and lead are clean and fit well
What to Bring on the Day
Don’t forget to pack:
-
✅ A bucket of water (very important!)
-
✅ Something to feed your pet (meal, pellets, bottle of milk)
-
✅ A feeding container or bottle
-
✅ A cloth and/or brush for last-minute clean-ups
-
✅ A clean halter and lead rope

Ag Day Market & Gala - Be Part of the Fun!
Alongside our animals, games, and competitions, Wainui School’s Ag Day also hosts a lively Market & Gala - and we’d love you to be part of it!
Whether you’re a local maker, creative, business, or just love putting something fun together, this is your chance to set up a stall and join in the community celebration.
With families, friends, and neighbours all coming together, it’s the perfect opportunity to share what you do while supporting our tamariki.
Please note: Wainui School will be running the official “Wainui Tuck Shop” on the day, so we ask that stalls do not sell food, sweet treats, snacks, or drinks. This keeps things simple (and yummy!) for everyone.
Stall spaces are free for Wainui whānau and available to our wider community too. Make sure you sign up early using the form below!
We can’t wait to see the colour, creativity, and energy you bring to Ag Day.
